LIAS Meeting Notes:
Oct, 2008

Cathy Cardineau, First Vice President of the Nassau County Aquarium Society spoke about her backyard pond and how simple it can be to make one. She talked about how she made a homemade barrel filter from directions printed in Ponds and Gardens Magazine.  (A PDF file of the article is available here). She used an old pickle barrel and bio balls in a laundry bag.
Cathy spoke about how, 6-7 years ago, she turned an abandoned pool into the pond measuring about 11x14 and containing 1700 gallons. She showed the evolution of the pond... started with a bridge going across to a screen house, but the fish never came out from under the deck so she removed the bridge. She has had the same fish the whole time and said that the secret to her clear water and no problems is keeping it stocked low and not having a heavy bio load.
