LaPorta from
the Marine Fishing Access and Artificial Reefs Unit of the NYSDEC
Bureau of Marine Resources discussed the Marine Artificial Reef program
that his department runs here around Long Island. His very
informative and entertaining presentation included maps, details
(construction, size, etc) and future plans about the eleven
artificial reefs circling Long Island. Chris also showed pictures of artificial reef construction, including such materials as old subway cars and ships. The highlight of the presentation were the many underwater video clips of the inhabitants that have made the artificial reef their home. The Artificial Reefs Unit of the NYSDEC website, listed below, contains additional interesting information. Be sure to check it out. Chris mentioned that they are looking for participants in the artificial reef volunteer diver program. Please check out the on line volunteer diver log if you would like to participate as an diver.
